If we made a list of the ideal destinations for a three-day getaway from Athens<\/strong>, Nafpaktos would definitely be among them. It combines mountains and the sea, is close to the capital, and offers plenty to see and do.<\/p>\n

Nafpaktos, destination for all seasons of the year<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Etoloakarnania will certainly be proud of its regions, but Nafpaktos definitely stands out. As soon as you see the Venetian harbor, you understand why. You are compensated for this view with the walls. As they circle the sea, they create one of the most picturesque ports in Greece. The boats there sail winter and summer, and you have to make the circle to enjoy the magical view and say hello to Miguel Cervantes, who stands there proud.<\/strong> This is where the history of the place begins. More specifically, the name of the city comes from the words “naus” and “pignymi,” which means ship construction. It was there that the Dorians first built their rudimentary boats during their descent around 1104 B.C. The city’s prosperity peaked during Roman rule, due to its position opposite the Peloponnese, and it was an important city of both Byzantium and the Despotate of Epirus.<\/p>\n

What you will see and do<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The picturesque Nafpaktos looks like an island, stuck on land. Arriving in Nafpaktos, the first thing you will do is walk to the Venetian harbor. On the coastal road, you will find all kinds of shops, from cafeterias to restaurants for all tastes. Your walk should definitely continue to the castle. The route to the castle, although short, offers a spectacular view of the city and a dose of pure nature with its green trees. The oxygen here really chokes you. As soon as you enter the castle, you are already traveling to another era.<\/strong> The castle of Nafpaktos is one of the best and well-preserved castles in Europe. Its well-preserved walls and loopholes take you back in time; the only things that show its age are the bushes that have sprouted and the lack of warriors! The view of the castle is simply unique! For the daring and keen photographers, there is a secret passage leading to the back of the castle.<\/strong> With a little climbing, you will reach the battlement to take the most beautiful, panoramic photo of Nafpaktos, with the Rio bridge in the background. \"\"<\/picture>Remember:<\/em> The castle of Nafpaktos is open to the public daily -except Mondays- from 08.00 to 15.00. The walk in the Old Town is a must in any case. You will walk through the cobbled streets with the low houses and gardens of the old town.<\/strong> The sights you will encounter will reveal the history of the city. Among them are the impressive Sidiroporta, the Vizier mosque, the hammam, and the Tzavela house. Next stop is the church of Agios Demetriou. And if you don’t want to light a candle, follow its steps, which will lead you to the Clock with Nafpaktos “on the plate”. When night falls, let go of the sea breeze, and we get lost in the alleys of Nafpaktos. The famous Stenopazaro cannot remain unexplored. A narrow neighborhood with countless cafes and taverns, shops, and locals who make their mark.<\/p>\n

Excursion to the surrounding areas<\/strong><\/h3>\n

A quick walk in the mountainous Nafpaktia will ideally close out the weekend before returning to Athens. The Alps of Greece are not unjustly called. You will find picturesque villages and ideal places to relax away from the everyday life of Athens. All you will need to do is cover 215 km to get to Nafpaktos and its beauties.<\/strong><\/p>\n
