It is the largest of all the forts of the &#8220;<strong>Metaxas line<\/strong>&#8221; in which great and historical moments of Greece were written. The fort is essentially a large complex that extends on a front of 2,500 meters. Its origins trace back to World War I, when it fell under the control of the German-Bulgarian alliance. It was a small force compared to the armored German forces. Their equipment was far superior not only numerically but also technologically to the Greeks.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The historical events of April 9, 1941, and the phrase<\/strong> &#8220;<strong>Forts do not surrender but are occupied&#8221;<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This is how April 9, 1941, arrived and the events that marked Fort Roupel. The German attacks lasted four days with 14 dead and 38 wounded soldiers fighting with self-sacrifice. At dawn on 10 April and after capitulation, the commander received a ceasefire order from the General Headquarters and the German colonel received Fort Roupel. This happened to the P8 machine gun led by Dimitrios Itsios. The words of Lieutenant Colonel Douratsos went down in history.
