Once called <strong>Ano Perithia<\/strong>, its unique place began to acquire permanent residents in the 14th century, when locals began to look for a safe place to protect themselves from pirates and their attacks. The mountainous location of the settlement, surrounded by a verdant forest is the most ideal choice. With pirate raids now a thing of the past, <strong>Corfiots<\/strong> now had to face the next major difficulty, that of<strong> malaria<\/strong>. The streets are decorated by <strong>130 houses of noble aura<\/strong>, which were built using as their inspiration the <strong>Venetian samples of architecture<\/strong>, while in an amphitheatrical layout around the village stand its amazing eight churches, attracting the eye of every visitor. An extremely impressive church of the village is the one located at its entrance point dedicated to <strong>St. James the Persian<\/strong>, with its trademark bell tower in a bright red hue, which is a prominent monument of religiosity.
