Thessaloniki has a reputation for being “loose”, but a hamlet is the one who has the grace. Christos Rachon in Ikaria is something unique. There, the concept of “loosely” has gone to another level. And if you visit it, you will understand why life is beautiful here. It is the only village in all of Greece – we are looking for it in the world – that has done night and day, going against every rule. Here, local shops open late at night and we do not mean bars, which is logical, but mini markets, tourist shops, taverns, cafes, etc. And they stay open even without the shopkeepers!<\/p>\n

In Christos Rachon, until noon, nothing moves. Only permanent residents who go to their agricultural work. The rest sleep, and when they wake up, they enjoy this absolute tranquility that the village offers them. In the central square, until the shops open late at night, there is a “funeral” silence that gives you the feeling that it is a deserted place, like those featured in the shots of Angelopoulos’ films.<\/p>\n

The truth is that, in Christos Rachon, during the day, you feel a bit like a movie’s protagonist. In the evening, however, the scenery changes, as the village is at the foot. Locals and visitors become friends, and the place is full of life. The ultimate transformation. And yes, like another Spyros Papadopoulos in The Unacceptables, you’ll ask yourself, “What happened, guys?”<\/p>\n

What is happening here is that the residents have grasped the true meaning of life: stress has no place in their daily lives. For 30 years now, in the traditional village of Ikaria, located at an altitude of about 400 meters, time seems to have stopped. Where, for others, 24 hours of the day are not enough for people? of Christ are enough to enjoy them at a relaxed pace and by their own rules. It is no coincidence that Ikaria is universally considered the island of longevity.<\/p>\n

However, Christos Rachon – apart from this particularity – is worth visiting for its location. It is located on the north side of Ikaria and is essentially its second center, as it is home to the third High School of Ikaria.<\/p>\n

It is 5 km from Armenistis and 65 km from the island’s capital. It is a mountainous rural village, built amphitheatrically, surrounded by pines, plane trees, oaks, and running waters. Christ preserves its traditional architecture. It’s a paved square, with the imposing church at its center, that gathers summer crowds of visitors who sit in the cafes and taste local delicacies, while in the evening they enjoy their drinks in the local bars.
