All those who have visited Pelion agree that its villages are one more beautiful than the other. Besides, their Pelion architecture sets them apart. However, some villages on the Centaurs’ mountain are more popular and attract more visitors. One of them is Vizitsa, the village with the most beautiful square you will ever see. In general, it generously offers its visitors images full of picturesque beauty, as well as the rich beauty of Pelion’s characteristic nature.<\/p>\n

Staying at the mansions in Vizitsa is a unique experience<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

In recent years, Vizitsa village has developed into a popular destination.<\/strong>\u00a0Well hidden among the plane trees, it is one of the most well-preserved traditional villages in Pelion, with imposing Pelion mansions and panoramic views of the Pagasetic Gulf that are surely unforgettable. After all, wherever you turn your gaze, it stumbles upon amazing images.<\/p>\n

But it is also a village with a long history. The first inhabitants are estimated to have been about 30 families, who settled from the north, building their houses close to each other, around 1650 AD. While in the first years, due to the fear of piracy, everything was under the absolute absence of sea view, over time, the village developed further east alongside the elevation lines, while, finally, with the opening of the main road, in the 1970s, the settlement expanded to the south, with the number of houses increasing dramatically.<\/p>\n

The historic village has been declared a preserved settlement, while its most characteristic element is the strong presence of traditional Pelion architecture. Most of the mansions in Vizitsa have been inhabited since the 16th century by Greeks of Egypt. About twenty years ago, the Greek National Tourism Organization made an effort to restore the old mansions, keeping their exterior appearance unchanged. This resulted in an “explosion” of tourist traffic, as it quickly became a destination for those who want quiet holidays in a traditional atmosphere reminiscent of childhood. And all this in the “embrace” of nature.<\/p>\n

The point in Vizitsa that stands out, but also characterizes it, is definitely its square, which in 1967 was declared a monument. It is the most beautiful square of the whole Pelion. Paved with perennial plane trees that cast an imposing shade, the square is the gathering place for locals and visitors.<\/p>\n

Here, cafes and taverns are concentrated, with the square bustling with life. In addition, all the cobbled streets start from here for a more thorough acquaintance with the village and a journey through time.<\/p>\n

The second most popular attraction in the village is the church of Zoodochos Pigi, built in 1725, destroyed in 1821, and rebuilt. However, in the following years it was severely damaged by three strong earthquakes and eventually closed. Today, after the last restoration, it remains open, with visitors admiring its ornate, wood-carved iconostasis in awe.<\/p>\n
