The village of Kastro of Thassos escapes from the norms that want the beloved island to be famous, mainly, for its beaches and, of course, for the dense vegetation – elements that classify it as a top summer destination. Thassos<\/strong> is a place where visitors will encounter history and archaeological findings scattered across the island and generously on display in some parts. The mainland hides beautiful surprises, and the villages offer dynamics to the island for holidays outside the summer.<\/p>\n

The village of Kastro is high on this list as it is the oldest village on the island; it has something to tell us.
\nAn atmospheric place in a location that caresses the eye. Built at an altitude of 500 meters, it overlooks the island. It is located northeast of Limenaria towards the center of the island, and took its name from the castle that had been built – with its wall dating back to 1403.
\nThat is, more than 6 centuries. It managed to survive those difficult years because it is not visible from the sea, which offered it a natural defense, as it was not a target of pirates for attacks and looting.<\/p>\n

\nAt the beginning of the 20th century, the Castle of Thassos began to be deserted. The inhabitants left it and chose the coastal areas of the island as they offered more opportunities. In recent years, in the oldest village of Thassos, something seems to be moving. The old houses were reconstructed, and today they are used as holiday homes, giving life mainly during the summer months. \"Thassos:<\/picture>One of the places worth visiting when the traveler is in the Castle is the church of Agios Athanasios, built in 1804 in just 40 days. For its construction, stones from the castle wall were used.<\/p>\n
