This year’s summer journey to Corfu<\/strong> wasn’t just a trip to one of Greece’s most photographed destinations. It was a dive into authenticity\u2014a passage through mountains, bays, flavors, and voices that remind you why Greece isn’t merely a country\u2014it’s a feeling.<\/p>\n

Soaking in the Amazing Views of San George<\/h3>\n

Our base was San George Pagon<\/strong>, on the northwest side of the island. There, perched on a hilltop with a sweeping view of the bay, stands Villa Sofia Amazing Views<\/strong>\u2014a little paradise hosted by Sofia Kikis, whose warmth makes you feel as though she\u2019s been waiting for you. Surrounded by ancient olive trees and the endless blue of the Ionian Sea, the villa offers a tranquil retreat. A large open living and dining area faces the horizon, the layout captures sea breeze and sunlight, and the wraparound terrace becomes your private stage for Corfu\u2019s rhythms\u2014from sunrise to sunset.<\/p>\n

And always, there\u2019s Sofia. Her presence ties it all together. She\u2019s the soul of the villa\u2014gracious, intuitive, and deeply connected to her heritage. On the second day of our five-day journey, we visited a magical place. Between the two bays of San George and Arillas, the mountain village of Afionas emerges\u2014a starting point for one of Corfu\u2019s most photographed beaches, Porto Timoni. From Afionas, you stand between worlds\u2014Libya to the left, Italy to the right, and in between them, the sea of Odysseus\u2014the vast Ionian.<\/p>\n

If you look carefully westward, you can see the Diapontia Islands \u2013 Mathraki, Ereikoussa, and the largest of them all, Othonoi, standing at the westernmost point of Greece, like punctuation marks in a poem written by the Ionian Sea. There, we witnessed one of the most soul-stirring sunsets we\u2019ve ever seen\u2014a sight no photograph could ever fully capture.<\/p>\n

The Path to Angelokastro and the Soul of Corfiot Hospitality<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Day three led us deeper into the mountains, to the traditional village of Krini<\/strong>, with the goal of hiking to Angelokastro<\/strong>, the Byzantine fortress that stands as a symbol of the island\u2019s endurance through time. We left the car, climbed the path lined with cypress trees and the scent of thyme, and reached the summit, where Corfu seems to speak directly to the eternal blue.<\/p>\n

On the way down, we found refuge under the shade of a massive plane tree that covers Platanos Square. There, two shops offered us more than products\u2014they gave us stories.<\/p>\n

At Stamatia Kaziani\u2019s grocery store, everything smelled of tradition, while across the way, at Spiros Avlonitis\u2019 caf\u00e9-grocery, the meze plates were served with conversation and laughter. Spiros, with a kind and generous heart, recommended we stay at his son Angelo\u2019s Platakia Blu apartments in Paleokastritsa, and without hesitation, offered access to a pool with one of the most impressive views in the area.<\/p>\n

Paliokastritsa and the View from Golden Fox<\/strong><\/h3>\n

On the fourth day of our journey, we arrived in Paleokastritsa<\/strong>, a place where the rugged beauty of cliffs meets the gentle clarity of the sea. Our stay at Platakia Blu Apartments, with a pool perched on the edge of a cliff and the vastness of the Ionian stretching out before us, left us speechless.<\/p>\n

On our return drive to Villa Sofia Amazing Views<\/strong>, we stopped at the Golden Fox Viewpoint in the village of Lakones, where Nicholas Mihalas welcomed us with open arms. The view from there was surreal: the Ionian lay before us like an endless sea of blue, and the sunset cast its final golden rays across the bay of Paleokastritsa. We had our coffee, and the ice cream was delicious. Nicholas\u2019 hospitality showed us how to truly love this place.<\/p>\n

The fifth day was devoted to the bay of San George. The beach, peaceful and clear, gave us one last swim, a farewell dive filled with gratitude for the days that had passed.<\/p>\n

Each evening we returned to Villa Sofia, closing our day with a swim under the moonlight, the calm of the surroundings enhanced by the endless blue of the Ionian Sea. It was an authentic experience, free of excess, that inspired us and left us with the most beautiful memories of the real Corfu.<\/p>\n
