How many beauties can Greece hold? Surely you have wondered something similar while traveling and getting to know new places, whether in the mountains or in our island country. Coasts, islands, meadows, mountains, and lakes compose a magnificent and impressive landscape. A puzzle of contrasts even within the same prefecture and around the same city. Crete undoubtedly boasts some of the most beautiful places in Greece and the most impressive natural sights. One of them is the so-called lake “heart” that enchants you, but… Not all year round. Lake Omalos is what we call a painting, and there are hardly any words that can capture its beauty.

Omalos: The lake is like a “heart.”

Lake Omalos is located on the homonymous plateau in the province of Viannos in the Regional Unit of Crete. The plateau is mainly used by shepherds of the area and only during the summer months. What impresses most is what the snow leaves behind when it melts. The reason for this is the small natural lake, which is preserved until about mid-spring. Then its waters drain into the ground, enriching the area’s aquifer. If there is one season that stands out in our hearts, it is winter. This is because the mountain of the Lord Christ that rises above is dressed in white, creating a magical scene.

In winter, you may find the lake even frozen, and you finally think you are in the frozen realm of a fairy tale. Nearby is also the equally beautiful and picturesque chapel of the Holy Spirit. But all of these are just descriptions of the beauty Crete ultimately offers you, in this case as well.

Mountain lakes

The lakes in the mountains have a special place, our heart, because they combine water with the wildest form of nature, and so the result is special. You will see dragons and elves springing up from somewhere. Drakolimnes also belongs to this category. Like the one you can read about HERE. A dragon lake that impresses. The Greek lakes are natural monuments that stand out and further adorn the scenery created by nature…

Winter is the best season to visit Lake Omalos. During this time, the mountain of Lord Christ rises above the plateau dressed in white snow, creating a magical and enchanting scene. You may even find the lake frozen, resembling a fairy tale landscape.

Lake Omalos typically dries up around mid-spring. After the snow melts and the lake reaches mid-spring, its waters drain into the ground, enriching the area's aquifer rather than remaining on the surface.

The picturesque chapel of the Holy Spirit is located nearby Lake Omalos. This equally beautiful chapel adds to the spiritual and scenic appeal of the Omalos plateau area.

Mountain lakes like Omalos are special because they combine water with the wildest forms of nature, creating a unique and magical result. These natural monuments stand out and further adorn the scenery, often evoking enchanting imagery of mythical creatures and natural wonders.
