A journey to Itea, a coastal gem in Fokida, unveils a fascinating blend of tradition, natural beauty, and modern charm. Legend speaks of a willow tree standing beside a unique gurgling spring, the sole water source in the surrounding landscape. From this tree, the town derives its name, still affectionately called "Itia" by locals who cherish its deep-rooted history. Despite being a relatively new town, Itea boasts a picturesque coastline and an inviting atmosphere perfect for peaceful getaways.

Unseen Greece: Itea deserves to be your next trip

Why Itea deserves to be your next tripWhat makes it stand out is its perfect layout, according to the Hippodamian system, thus offering comfortable streets, squares, and open tree-lined spaces. From Itea, you will gaze at the Peloponnese, while you will also enjoy the view of Galaxidi, and you will surely be impressed by the picture of the small islands located in its bay. The furthest away from the cluster is the islet of Agios Dimitrios which is located almost between Itea and Galaxidi and has a strange shape that has given it the name "Venizelos' hat". Another islet is Agios Konstantinos, on which there is a chapel dedicated to the saint.

Itea's Geography

Itea is "embraced" by the Corinthian Gulf, while along with neighboring Kirra, it is built at the bottom of the Krissaios Gulf. Behind it lies the olive grove of Amfissa, one of the oldest in the country and the largest in the Balkans. It is also surrounded by Mount Giona and Mount Parnassos, so you can understand that it is "placed" in a beautiful natural environment. Itea was founded in 1830, and in recent years it has experienced great tourist development. So, you will find several accommodations, but also picturesque taverns and cafes on the beach overlooking the beautiful Corinthian Gulf. It is also a destination for all seasons since in winter you can enjoy your short trips to Mount Parnassos for skiing and winter sports. In the bay of Agali is the Skala of Salona, where the "Naval Battle of Skala of Salona" took place in September 1827.

Just 17 km away is Delphi, the navel of the earth. It is a great way to spend your time in that amazing archeological place, full of energy and good vibes. Kirra, as mentioned, is just 2 km from Itea and is an ancient city. Here, you can visit the early Christian church of Agios Nikolaos, the chapel of Agios Ioannis as well as the old watermill of "Skliri" which today has been converted into a residence. Next to the primary school of Kirra, there are remnants of the warehouses of the port while ruins of the ancient port are half-submerged on its beach.

How to get to Itea

The trip to Itea from Athens is about a 200 km drive (see here). If you are coming from Patras the trip is about 110 km (see here).  There are 3 major cities, as mentioned above,  close by Itea that you must visit if you are staying more than 3-4 days in the Itea. That is Galaxidi which is only 16 km away (see here), Delfi which is 17 km away (see here) and lastly Arachova which is 30 km away.
