Attica; a trip to Porto Germeno

An exciting journey through Mount patera that will take you to Corinthian gulf and to Porto Germenos.

Since we’re officially in spring, I thought I’d take a walk in to the sea. But the weather has other moods. I went to an area of Idyllia. From what you’re going to see, you’ll realize that the name of the municipality is no accident.

How to get there

I chose the National Road of Athens – Corinth and at the junction of Eleusina I made a right, following the old National road from Athens – Thebes. A few turns after Agia Sotira with the taverns, I turned left on a magical and well marked route. I didn’t realize that the car swallowed 62 kilometers from the center of Athens to here.

The landscape? Unique!

The route to The Aegosthena or Porto Germenos, through Mount patera, is fascinating. It was cloudy and windy the day I went. Now what can I say? It’s all about the landscape. Porto Germenos, the Aegisthena of antiquity, is a settlement in the entrance of a bay on the western border of Attica. The structure may be unregulated and has no characteristics of traditional architecture, but the beaches with turquoise waters are the ones that attract the eye. Sea ahead, pine trees in the back.

A secret city under Athens

A secret city under Athens

Just above the sandy beaches of Porto Germenos, it is a series of cafes and taverns that will satisfy your hunger. Even with the weather like what happened to me, a walk where the sea ends maximizes the degree of escape outside Athens.

The fortress of the Aegosthenon.

Before I left Porto Germeno, I stopped at the fortress of The Aegosthenians, with strategic importance in antiquity and byzantine times. Built on a hill in 343 BC is considered the best preserved ancient castle. Inside his acropolis, at the late Byzantine period, he hosted a monastery from which the remains of cells and the catholic are preserved. Next to the ruins of the monastery there is the newest church of Panagia, with a large pine tree covering it like an umbrella. The clouds that ran in the sky, the spring garment of nature, inspired photographs.

Porto Germeno won me over. The route there, the hospitable people of the settlement and its natural beauties are good reasons to go .

Next escape is the place where, according to mythology, Hercules fought with a lion.
