Greece is known worldwide for its rich and great history that dates back centuries. In addition to the great historical events, monuments, and structures that have been created over the years, there are some that have now acquired great value. One such monument is the Bridge of Arcadian, also known as the Bridge of Kazarma. It is a Mycenaean bridge located in the village of Arcadian Argolida and is considered one of the most important monuments of Mycenaean culture. It is also the oldest preserved bridge in Europe and has an interesting history.

The impressive bridge of the Arcadian

The Bridge of Arcadian is located on the road that connects Nafplio with Epidaurus and is close to the village of Arcadian Argolida. It is one of the most important monuments of Mycenaean culture. You’ll hear the locals call it the Kazarmas Bridge. Its history, either way, remains the same. The bridge rises four meters from the earth and is 22 meters long and 5.6 meters wide. From there, Mycenaean warriors passed and royal chariots rode through. At the same time, it protected the area from the rushing waters of torrents1.

in Greece one of the oldest preserved bridges in Europe

The Bridge of Arcadian is considered one of the oldest bridges in Europe and dates back to 1300 BC. It was originally built to connect Epidaurus with Mycenae and Ancient Tirintha. The construction of the bridge is impressive as it was built with large raw limestones without the use of a binder. The Mycenaean craftsmen followed a frequent way of construction at the time called cyclopes. This method was successful because the weight of the limestones and their symmetrical placement in terms of their vertical axis made the building stable.

If you find yourself escaping to Nafplio, it’s worth taking a walk through this bridge and admiring its magnificence.
