Greece is home to more lakes than we might imagine. While traveling around the country, you can see small and large lakes that all have their own history. Some of them stand out for their name and history. One such lake is Lake Karla, located in Thessaly and specifically in Larissa. The lake was literally reborn after disappearing and has a very interesting history despite the fact that it is not well-known to many. If you find yourself in the area, it is worth getting to know Lake Karla.

Karla: A lake that was reborn

Lake Karla, formerly called Voivida, has a strange history since it was originally deliberately drained. The lake was located southeast of Larissa, near the northern slopes of Pelion, on the border of the prefectures of Larissa and Magnesia. It was close to 1960 when it was decided to dry it as it was causing problems for agricultural crops. More specifically, with the rainfall, Lake Carla created floods in the agricultural crops around it while some swampy areas around it caused the strong presence of insects.

However, over the years, it was found that the drying of Lake Karla was not correct. This is because the impact on the ecosystem was very significant. So now the lake was reborn through specific actions that were made, but not in its original size, since it once reached about 190 thousand acres and its depth reached about 5 meters. During the works for its rebirth, various archaeological findings came to light.

For example, Lake Chimaditida is the result of glaciers, but also the less-known Lake Petron with its cinematic beauty.

What is certain is that whichever lake you find yourself in, you will feel different emotions, especially if you go at different times of the year. They are an attraction of nature or man that always impresses…
