Evritania: Gorges, lakes, and picturesque villages create an unforgettable scenery

Karpenisi: A special journey

Karpenisi

Perched at an altitude exceeding nine hundred meters, on the southwestern steep slope of Mount Velouchi, the distinctive town of Karpenisi unfolds before your eyes. Nestled amidst a backdrop teeming with fir trees and shielded from the biting northern winds, it’s bound to captivate you from the moment you arrive.

Stroll through its traditional square, where you’ll encounter ancient plane trees and a spring with cool, gurgling water. In its scenic surroundings, you’ll have the chance to see the monuments dedicated to the revolutionaries Antonis Katsantonis and Markos Boutaris, who sought refuge in Karpenisi’s rugged landscape. A few steps further will bring you to the old church of Agia Triada, the area’s cathedral. Its profoundly devout atmosphere is worth pausing for.

Karpenisi

Venture south of the city to ascend the lush hill of Agios Demetriou, home to a chapel that’s over two centuries old. Let your eyes wander across the open horizon, taking in the unforgettable view of not just the entire city, but also Mount Velouchi that sprawls at your feet. At the foot of this hill, the Karpenisiotis River springs forth. After merging with the Krikelliotis River, it culminates in the Kremasta Lake, leaving behind a trail of beautiful vistas brimming with nature’s presence. One such spot is the area of Potamia, where you can listen to the ceaseless flow of water.

Karpenisi: Panagia Prousiotissa, a monastery full of history

The Monastery of Proussos

A mere 36 km from Karpenisi will bring you to the sacred grounds of the monastery dedicated to Panagia Prousiotissa. Nestled within a small cave, this monastery is the site where the miraculous icon was discovered, believed to have been miraculously transported from Bursa in Asia Minor. This unique icon is adorned with a cover made of gold and silver, which legend attributes as a donation from Georgios Karaiskakis himself.

As you journey towards the cave, you’ll encounter the path marked with the so-called ‘footprints of the Virgin Mary’. Seven human footprints, etched in white marble against a backdrop of dark rock, fuel the legend that these are the steps left by the Virgin Mary as she carried her sacred icon into the cave.

The gorge known as Panta Vrechi (always raining in Greek), a stone’s throw away from Karpenisi in Evritania, is an experience you’re sure to remember. Its name, translating to ‘always raining’, stems from the sensation of rainfall created by the cascading waterfalls within its confines. Lakes, caves, rocks, and lush vegetation come together to form a unique environment situated between the villages of Roska and Doliana. To truly appreciate its vast beauty, it’s a sight you must behold in person. So, lace up your sneakers, apply some sunscreen, check the weather forecast, and set off on a hiking adventure. You might even get the chance to partake in canoeing or rafting.
