What is life like in mountaineering shelters?
Before you book a mountain shelter in Greece, there are some things you should know. Mountaineering shelters are not for experts only, but they are also not like hotels. You may have to bring your bedding or sleeping bags, depending on the shelter. They will tell you what you need when you call them. You also have to keep the place clean and tidy. Most shelters have a living room with a fireplace and a kitchen. The bedrooms can vary in number and size, depending on how many people the shelter can host. Food is usually provided by the shelter, but it is not included in the low price of the accommodation.

Note also that on Mount Velouchi at an altitude of 1,870 meters, there is a small lake of alpine type with a diameter of about 25 meters. This lake maintains its level almost constant all year round. This happens for two reasons - on the one hand because of the melting snow that covers the surrounding area, which is sometimes delayed until June, but also because of the existence of underground springs.
