Have you ever wondered about a unique travel experience? Consider a trip to Polylimnio in the prefecture of Messinia. Here, you might find the answers you seek. The dense vegetation stretches as far as the eye can see. Emerald-shaded lakes, washed by waterfalls, create a dreamlike landscape. It’s so surreal, you might think you’re dreaming even if it’s just for a moment. So, we embarked on an exploration of the amazing Polylimnio.

Lake Plastiras: an ideal weekend getaway

Polylimnio: Reality exceeds expectations

Messinia-Polylimnio

Polylimnio, often referred to as the “blue lake of Greece,” is where you can truly connect with nature. The terrain’s unique morphology has created an unparalleled landscape with 15 consecutive lakes of varying sizes, earning the area its name.

Waterfalls flow into these magnificent lakes, each with a unique name reflecting local events, as indicated by wooden signs. This adds a fairytale-like charm to the place. The lush greenery from olive groves and quaint wooden bridges further enhance this enchanting setting.

But it’s not just the flora that’s impressive; the fauna is equally remarkable. As you traverse the gorge beyond the lakes, you’ll encounter a cave filled with beautiful butterflies. This truly is a place where nature thrives in all its glory.

Polylimnio: A magical route

Messinia-Polylimnio

As you begin your exploration, veer left to encounter Lake Italos. Nestled amidst rocks, its natural landscape gives it the appearance of a pool crafted by Mother Nature herself. To your right, you’ll discover the Black Lake with its pocket waterfall cascading into crystal clear waters. Take a moment to rest on the rocks, catch your breath, and soak in the stunning view.

Next, carefully navigate the slippery terrain as you ascend to Lake Kadoula. Its heart-like shape has earned it its name. Allow the magic of the surroundings to captivate you. A few meters further, you’ll find yourself at Lake Kadi, often referred to as the most beautiful lake.

Alternatively, follow the signs for a different route leading to Lakes Panagos and Stathoula, where you can marvel at their submerged beauty.

Lake Kadi, spanning about three hundred square meters, is encircled by towering rocks and a 25-meter waterfall. This is the spot most visitors choose for a dive, using the rope ladder for assistance. The forceful cascade of the waterfall offers a natural hydromassage experience. If you’re an adventurer seeking a full experience with a dive, be prepared for the particularly cold waters.

Above Lake Kadi, there’s a large pedestal. Reaching it requires good physical fitness and some mountaineering experience. So, if you’re up for the challenge, this could be an exciting addition to your adventure.

Polylimnio: Useful tips for the route

  • Remember to fill up your water bottles at the canteen in the parking area.
  • Don’t forget to bring your hat and sunscreen for protection against the sun. If you plan on diving, pack your swimsuit and towels.
  • The trail can be challenging in some areas, so it might not be suitable for young children.
  • Plan your excursion keeping these points in mind for a memorable and safe adventure.
