Karpenisi: a trip to Nature
The first thing that you might know and expect is to find yourself in a landscape with nature. The mountainous corner of Central Greece has it all. Green landscapes, rivers, and running waters are everywhere. The sound of water always fascinates you a little more and tames the mountain. The wild perhaps landscape takes another form more sweet and calm, And maybe the same Karpenisi is not famous exclusively for its picturesque and beauty but the whole area does it.
In Karpenisi nature rages and creates an ideal scenery for walking especially if you are a lover of the genre. What we always like to do is do small explorations of the forest with the children and create our own fairy tales with our imagination. Take along sports shoes and clothes (warm) as well as a backpack to be able to carry water and the essentials. If you like nature you will do a lot of walking. At the foot of the imposing mountain Velouchi, you will come closer to nature and calm down the days you will find there.
Tip: Do not forget to take a walk in the famous and beautiful Kefalovryso. Ask the locals to help you but if you want to be prepared click HERE to see the route on Google Maps. It is a green area, a wonderful plane tree forest that excites young and old.
Visit Prousos Monastery
Even if on your travels going to monasteries and churches is not your first choice, Prousos Monastery is a special chapter. A true attraction worth visiting if you find yourself in the area. You will need to cover a distance of about 30 km from Karpenisi to get there. The mountains Helidona and Kaliakouda join in that house and surround the Prousos Monastery, making the spot even more imposing. It leaves you in awe from the first minute you are there, before you even get out of the car.
The historic Prousos Monastery is carved into a vertical rock and has stood there for centuries causing admiration. The Prousos Monastery was built in the 12th century and hosts in its small museum various ecclesiastical relics, Byzantine icons, and part of the weaponry of Georgios Karaiskakis.
Gastronomic journey and... Hanging out in cozy guesthouses
The trip to Karpenisi is nature, walking, and trails but also... good food. And this is another incentive if you are a gourmet, and you choose destinations where you know you will eat traditional recipes well cooked. If you like meat, you can't go to Karpenisi and not eat local sausages. Together with wine or tsipouro, they are the perfect meze. (The point is to make a decision to get up when you sit down because it's not easy...)
Apart from meat, try local pies and traditional recipes that you may not have tried before. You won't lose. Finally, we keep the spoon sweets made by housewives with passion and care. If the road takes you, go try traditional flavors in Mikro Chorio. You will promise that your next culinary journey will start again from there.
Your stay in Karpenisi begins and ends with relaxation and tranquility where you will find many well-groomed people as well as traditional hotel houses. Look for what suits you but remember that the entrepreneurs of the area have raised the bar and make sure to meet your needs down to the last detail.
Don't forget
Depending on how many days you will stay in Karpenisi, put in your program a mini road trip to the surrounding villages. Around Karpenisi you will find amphitheatrically built various settlements. Among the fir trees and in a wonderful landscape is the village of Fidakia (you can read more about it HERE) and Koryschades where the interesting Museum of National Resistance is located.
