Lake Tsivlou: The severe landslide that created it and the… Resemblance to a French lake

Lake Tsivlou, as we said, is a natural lake that was formed by a landslide. In fact, the incident was so serious that people also died. It is no coincidence that it is also called Mavrolimni for the harm it caused. More precisely, everything happened in March 1913. Where Lake Tsivlou is today, there was an open valley in the middle of which the river flowed calmly.

On one side of the valley, there was a ravine with a small tributary of Krathis. There, then, at the confluence of rivers, there was the small picturesque settlement of Tsivlos. On the other side of the valley and quite high up towards the mountain was the village of Sylivena. But what happened? A landslide brought chaos. Nature, however, had warned with microvibrations. So the inhabitants of Sylivena abandoned the village in time. The settlement of Tsivlou did not suffer the same fate. The landslide that occurred caused the entire mountainside to roll rapidly. As a result, the soil ended up at the point where the settlement of Tsivlou was, with catastrophic consequences and human losses.

From this landslide, however, Lake Tsivlou was slowly created by the waters of the river.

A lake of rare beauty that really impresses the visitor. In fact, its history makes it resemble a French lake. An almost similar landslide created Lake Lac de Vallon in France. A natural landslide resulted in its formation, which took place about 72 years ago.

Escape to the beauties of the area

Lake Tsivlou is just the reason for someone to start their journey in the area. You definitely have a lot to see and do, and you can book a weekend and fill your mind with images and experiences. Frequently Asked Questions

Lake Tsivlou is a natural lake located in Achaia, Greece, that was created by a catastrophic landslide in March 1913. The landslide occurred when an entire mountainside collapsed into a valley where the settlement of Tsivlou was located. Over time, waters from the river accumulated in the depression caused by the landslide, gradually forming the lake we see today.

Lake Tsivlou is also called Mavrolimni, which refers to the dark or tragic nature of the lake. The alternative name reflects the devastating consequences of the 1913 landslide that created it, which resulted in human casualties and the destruction of the settlement of Tsivlou.

During the March 1913 landslide that created Lake Tsivlou, the village of Sylivena was saved because inhabitants received warnings from microvibrations and evacuated in time. However, the settlement of Tsivlou, located at the base of the valley, was not so fortunate and suffered catastrophic damage with significant human losses when the mountainside collapsed onto it.

Yes, Lake Tsivlou resembles Lake Lac de Vallon in France in terms of its formation. Both lakes were created by natural landslides. Lac de Vallon in France was formed approximately 72 years before Lake Tsivlou through a similar geological event, making them comparable examples of landslide-formed lakes.

Lake Tsivlou and the surrounding area in Achaia are an ideal destination during autumn and winter months. During these seasons, the yellow colors of nature and the transformed landscapes create scenes reminiscent of fairy tales. The area offers various accommodations, dining options, and opportunities to explore nearby attractions like Kalavryta.
