Turquoise and blue waters. Isolated beaches with natural pools. Wild rocks with elaborate formations. All this makes up the image that you will see on the largest uninhabited island in the Aegean Sea. We are talking about the island of Polyaigos next to Kimolos. An unparalleled landscape of natural beauty. One more beautiful corner of our country.

Polyaigos, the largest uninhabited island in the Aegean Archipelago

The island of Polyaigos is officially the largest uninhabited island in the entire Aegean Sea. Its permanent residents are only the hundreds of wild goats that make their presence felt everywhere. Nature in all of its splendour, that is. A spotless island without human intervention that rivets you especially if you look at it from above.

Polyaigos took its name - as one can easily realize - from its many wild goats. It is a popular destination for those who choose vacations on a yacht. However, there are often visitors who also choose to go there on excursion boats.

It is also, not unfairly, characterized as the uninhabited island with the natural pools. It has beaches that look like swimming pools and geological formations that refer to works of art. One admires how impressive a creation nature can make.

The largest uninhabited island in the Aegean Sea from antiquity times until today belongs administratively to Kimolos. It seems it has always been sought after for its mineral wealth. Thus Kimolos and Milos began in 416 B.C. a legal dispute over the ownership of the island, which ended in 338 B.C. by the decision of the court of Argus, who awarded the island to Kimolos.

Part of the island belongs to the church of Kimolos, Panagia Odigitria, while most of the island is owned by the bequest of Ioannis Stavros Logothetis. On the island, which consists mainly of volcanic rocks as well as the neighbouring Kimolos and Milos, there are hills with a height of 320-350 meters.

Greece has included Polyaigos in the European Union's Natura 2000 programme, considering it as an important habitat that should remain undisturbed by the human presence. On the other hand, the seal monachus-monachus of the Mediterranean Sea gives birth to its babies on that island
