Ambelakia village, Larissa and their special history
Ambelakia took its name in the middle of the 14th century. The settlement is said to owe its name to the vineyards of the area, with the inhabitants engaged in viticulture at that time. The unique and special thing that happened in Ambelakia, and there is no exaggeration in the characterizations, was the creation of the first agricultural cooperative in the world! The "Common Fellowship", as was its title. A pioneering move was made in 1778 and the reputation of the village went beyond the Greek borders, reaching the whole of Europe.
An important factor in the economic development of Ambelakia was that during the Turkish occupation, the village was not inhabited by Turks. In this way, its inhabitants had managed to maintain some important privileges. They may have paid tribute to the Turkish conqueror, but they had freedom of self-government and as a result, they carried out economic activities that kept them at a high standard of living. Due to the financial strength of the area, several merchants actively participated in the financial support of the liberation struggle, while some were members of the Filiki Eteria.
