Anavyssos is a place that has always attracted the summer lovers of Attica. It is not only its convenient proximity to the center that makes it so appealing. The main attraction is its stunning beaches, which offer a refreshing escape from the heat and the crowds. One of these secret spots of beauty and tranquility is the beach below Agios Nikolaos church.
A tranquil oasis awaits on a sandy strip at Agios Nikolaos Beach
Agios Nikolaos is a beach that will make you doubt if you are still on the edge of Attica. A strange strip of sand connects a small island with the solid ground of the prefecture, creating an almost exotic landscape. The beach is located at the bottom of the School of tourism professions and the Nautical Sports Club of Anavyssos, with its horizon stretching to the Aegean Sea. This alone creates clean, crystal-clear waters with fine pebbles on its coast. The sea starts shallow but is found to deepen along the way, so beware of younger family members.
On the right side of the beach, as you gaze at the Saronic Gulf, you will see a wonderful beach formed. In its initial part, it is organized with a beach bar and sunbeds. But then it remains free with plenty of space to set up your umbrella. For this reason, it is also campers who choose to spend the night on its beach. With a little climbing and your athletic shoes as an ally, you can reach a small beach preferred by nudists.
There is space on the beach to play Beach volleyball and football. You can comfortably combine your dives with physical exercise. If you have your own canoe, do not forget to take it with you and paddle while enjoying the view.
How to get to Agios Nikolaos Beach in Anavyssos

More or less in an hour, with... satisfactory traffic, and driving on Athens-Sounio Avenue in the direction of Anavyssos you will have reached your destination. Agios Nikolaos has parking for your car, while there are options in the surrounding area. However, during periods of high mobility, such as Saturdays and Sundays in July and August, make sure to start earlier to secure the coveted seat.
If you are not driving, or you want to spend your trip more carefree, the local buses 122 and then 123, will make sure to take you there.
What to see and do at the beach of Agios Nikolaos
Agios Nikolaos Beach is named after the stone church of Agios Nikolaos located on the islet on the opposite side of the strip. You can easily reach it by walking a few minutes along the coast. It was built during the Turkish occupation and faced a fire of unknown origin in 2005 which left a piece of it damaged. Nowadays its damages have been fully repaired, making it fully functional in all kinds of mysteries.
Just behind the picturesque chapel, you will see an almost isolated small beach. The benches that surround the church offer the right place to stop for a break and admire the landscape.
If you wish to continue your journey upwards, you will see remnants of walls of ancient civilization. During the Second World War, they were again found to be used.
Many visitors to Agios Nikolaos Beach do not hesitate to compare the beauty of the environment with the unique Balos Beach in Crete or Bella Vraka Beach in Sivota.
All that remains is to be there and see it -or not- with your own eyes…
