Πόσο μακριά είναι το Αγκίστρι από την Αθήνα;

Το Αγκίστρι βρίσκεται σε απόσταση μόλις μίας ώρας από το λιμάνι του Πειραιά. Μπορείτε να φτάσετε εκεί είτε με δελφίνι (55 λεπτά) είτε με ferry (περίπου μιάμιση ώρα), γεγονός που το κάνει ιδανικό για μονοήμερη εκδρομή ή διακοπές κοντά στην Αθήνα.

Το Αγκίστρι διαθέτει πολλές όμορφες παραλίες σε φυσικό τοπίο. Μερικές από τις πιο γνωστές είναι η παραλία της Σκάλας με χρυσαφένια άμμο, η Απόνησος που βρίσκεται λίγα χιλιόμετρα από το λιμάνι, και άλλες που χαρακτηρίζονται από τα πράσινα πεύκα που φτάνουν μέχρι τη θάλασσα και τα σμαραγδένια νερά.

This island gives -without exaggeration- the feeling that its visitor is starring in some sequences of the movie “Blue Lake”. At the same time, holidays in Agistri will take you back to that time when everything, including our view of tourist amenities, was simpler. At that time, holidays were synonymous with a virgin, beautiful landscape, with sun, sea, good company, walking among the pine trees, nights on the beach, and the unobstructed sound of the waves in the ears.

Agistri: The first acquaintance before the beaches

As with Aegina, you can get here in two ways. Either by hydrofoil or ferry. The first will drop you off in Megalochori in 55 minutes, while the second will drop you off in Skala in about an hour and a half. The most “strategic” place for your stay is probably Skala, the second largest village in Agistri, where the heart of the island beats. The accommodation is enough, some have a sea view. You should book them in time because as soon as the weather dawns, the famous Agistri really receives… a visitor onslaught!

In essence, however, no matter how many visitors Agistri receives, it never becomes aggressively touristic. So its pristine nature, the fantastic combination of pine trees that reach the sea and emerald waters, is not disturbed. The whole island has an area of only 14 square kilometers, and if you like walking, you have found yourself in the ideal place for beautiful, pleasant hikes in the heart of wonderful nature. You should note that the island is full of uphills and downhills. The distance from Megalochori to Skala on foot is about 15-20 minutes. However, there is always the solution of a bicycle or a scooter.

Agistri: In Limenaria and the alleys of Skliri

The navel of the island is, as we said, Skala, the port, where ferries dock. Here you will find large hotel units, picturesque taverns, cafés, and clubs for evening entertainment, as well as an easily accessible beach with golden sand. The “capital” of the island is Megalochori or Mylos (from the only flour mill on the island that operated until the 60s). It is a quiet village with picturesque alleys. Here moor the “flying dolphins”, while in the summers the harbor is filled with yachts. The most picturesque village of the island is Limenaria which “pops up” through pine, cypress and olive trees. In this village stand out the stone houses, the church of Agia Kyriaki, the old school, a picturesque café-tavern, and a traditional bakery that will fill the air with the aromas wafting from its door.

In the alleys of Skliri, again, you will get the feeling that you are somewhere in the Cyclades. Note that both locals and fanatical visitors all agree that every afternoon, Megalochori “gives” the most beautiful sunset of the Argosaronic Gulf.

Agistri: Aponisos Beach — Aponisos beach in Agistri

The landscape that dominates Agistri is a combination of green and beautiful beaches. The above “golden” combination is evident in Aponisos (a few kilometers from the port of Skala), a private island in the southwestern part of the island. The beach has an entrance, and the package includes a sunbed, umbrella, beer, or soft drink. Even if you do not want to dive, the relaxation that the landscape will give you, as long as you stay here, is guaranteed. If you want to “image” Aponisos, imagine it as a small corner in the Caribbean.

The beaches of Magiza and Bariamas, which are very close to Aponisos, offer a similar landscape and fewer people. The most fanatical lovers of Agistri, however, consider that the most beautiful beach of the island is Chalikada. It can put you in a little trouble with going up and down, but as soon as you fall into its arms, you will be enchanted by the image of this small bay that has a strong Cycladic feel.

Beautiful and different is the beach of Dragonera, with a few rocks and deep, crystal-clear waters. Here you will also find a well-equipped canteen. An unforgettable experience is horse riding, even if you have no experience with horses, along a beautiful route that combines sea and forest around Aponisos.

Where and what to eat in Agistri

We start from “Aponisos” in the homonymous location, where you will enjoy fried fish or squid, and generally plain seafood… Turkish delights. In the touristic Skala, on the beach, you will find the tavern “Gkionis”. The locals trust it with their eyes closed, since it has been operating for almost 60 years now, serving traditional Greek food, fresh fish, and well-cooked dishes of the hour. In the same area, there is the well-known restaurant “Toxotis”. This place has a long history, having started as a grocery store and later becoming the school of Agistri. Since 1981, it has operated as the Pappas family’s restaurant. Also in Skala, 50 meters from the beach, you will find “Gyrokomio”, a picturesque traditional grill house that serves delicious souvlaki, juicy kokoretsi, and a nice selection of appetizers. Bakery “loaded” with plenty of goodies is the one in Megalochori. Cheese pies, puff pastries, bagels, stuffed Cypriot pies, snacks, and sandwiches, you will all find them in this bakery to start your breakfast. Finally, on the way to Chalikada, a place to eat we recommend with your eyes closed is “Alkioni”, the hotel’s kitchen, which has been operating since 1982 and has occasionally received favorable comments from major media outlets such as the New York Times and the Guardian. The environment, with the tables very close to the sea, is idyllic and sophisticated, while equally… The dishes are also refined. Here you will also taste fresh fish and juicy meats, Turkish-influenced appetizers, and other dishes of Greek creative cuisine.

The surprise lake

Before we close this ode to Agistri, we leave you with a small “surprise” you will see in this little green paradise of the Argosaronic Gulf. Agistri also has a small lake. It is located on the road that passes through Limenaria and goes to Aponisos. Near it is the chapel of Agios Nikolaos, which you can reach by a small detour, just before you reach the lake. In fact, the lake is a picturesque wetland that was once a salt lake. To renew its waters, a small channel to the sea has been opened. Around it, there is a dirt road, about 800 meters long, through which you can tour the area.
