Journey through history: The Sanctuary of Menelaus and Helen of Beauty

Lake Pamvotis: A gem made of water

Ioannina-Pamvotis

Lake Pamvotis, one of the oldest lakes in the world and the second oldest in Europe, will captivate you from the moment you lay eyes on its waters. These remarkable waters have been known to freeze in the past, offering an alternative mode of transportation through cycling or even walking. The lake spans 23 square kilometers and is nestled between two mountains: Mitsikeli and Tomaros. These mountains contribute to a breathtaking atmosphere. The lake’s 11-meter depth is fed by three springs that originate from the base of the mighty Mitsikeli mountain.

The lake’s lush vegetation includes willows and plane trees, while reeds grow along its banks. Combined with the foggy landscape that blankets the area in the early morning hours, it creates a scene straight out of a movie that you’re sure to find enchanting. The lake is not only home to unique flora but also a diverse range of fauna. Migratory birds find refuge in the trees along its coast, while its waters are home to a variety of reptiles and fish.

If you’re looking to do more than just admire the beauty of a place and want to fully immerse yourself in it, the waters of Lake Pamvotis are perfect for a range of sports activities. This allows you to experience a deep connection with nature. You can choose from rowing, canoeing-kayaking, and water skiing to add an adrenaline rush to your visit, alongside your relaxing walks by the lake.

The story that follows its waters

In its approximately seven million years of existence, the Lake of Ioannina has naturally been the backdrop for numerous stories. These tales further enhance the captivating aura of mystery that the lake exudes.

Ioannina-Pamvotis

The most renowned tale, which has become synonymous with the lake’s landscape, features Kyra Frosini. The well-known beauty, Frosyni, a noblewoman, was a victim of murder by Ali Pasha (Ottoman Ruler) himself, who drowned her in the lake’s waters along with 16 other women from Ioannina, by his command. Legend has it that her death was a result of Pasha’s unrequited love for her and his jealousy over her relationship with his son, Mukhtar.

On the northwest side of the lake, you’ll find a truly enchanting island. Although it doesn’t have an official name, it’s often referred to as Mrs. Frosini’s Island. With around two hundred inhabitants, it’s one of the few inhabited lake islands in Europe.

Take a boat from the pier and within ten minutes, you’ll be immersed in its fairytale-like landscape. Stroll along its traditional stone paths that exude charm. Don’t forget to stop by Ali Pasha’s house, where this historical figure lived and died. Before you leave, enjoy a meal at one of the local taverns. Try their local specialties, which include dishes with eel, trout, or frog’s legs.

How to get to Ioannina Lake? Starting from Athens, you will need to cross about 410 kilometers to find yourself in the unique landscape of Pamvotis.

Lake Pamvotis

Lake Pamvotis, true to its name, is a place that nourishes everyone. Immerse yourself in its extraordinary landscape and allow it to feed not just your mind, but above all, your soul with unforgettable sights.
