Kleidonia Bridge: Unraveling the Historical Tale

Kleidonia Bridge, a single-arched bridge of astonishing beauty

The Kleidonia Bridge, dating back to around 1850, stands in the place of a similar structure that existed before it. This single-arched bridge, known for its stunning beauty, is further enhanced by its location over the Voidomatis River, known for its crystal clear, turquoise waters. The bridge is a short walk from the village of Kleidonia in Konitsa, a popular spot for visitors who come to admire the natural beauty or watch the rafting boats that navigate the river.

The area is characterized by the presence of plane trees and a path that traverses the local gorge. Additionally, there are smaller hiking trails that begin here, offering more ways to explore the area.

Unveiling the Historical Vendetta: A Tale from Kleidonia Bridge

Tradition marks the site of the current and previous bridge with a tale of vendetta. In the late 16th century, the Gereni family, from the nearby village of Agios Minas, set out with a bride for a wedding, unaware of the fate that awaited them. At the bridge, they were ambushed by a man from the Stamatis family, who had his own reasons for wanting to disrupt the wedding. This man, along with his accomplices, attacked the family as soon as they spotted them with the bride, leading to the tragic death of her parents and two cousins. This event sparked a cycle of vendetta in the village, with the bride’s family later retaliating by killing members of the Stamatis family, as per local accounts.

The Kleidonia Bridge has a macabre story to tell its passers-by

The Ottoman authorities reportedly tried to halt the vendetta at the Kleidonia Bridge, but their efforts were unsuccessful. Following the violent disputes, the once vibrant village of Agios Minas began to empty out, as per tradition. This vendetta was immortalized in an Epirus song with lyrics that speak of loss and sorrow on the bridge.

Kleidonia Bridge, crafted by renowned stonemasons of a bygone era, is one among many in the region. If you’re in the area, don’t miss the chance to visit the towering Konitsa Bridge over the Aoos River, a unique Greek river that flows into a foreign sea. You can also embark on a two-hour hiking trail from here to the Stomio Monastery, home to the cell of St. Paisius. This region offers a unique blend of history and natural beauty, making it a must-visit destination in any season.
