There are many films that were shot against the backdrop of Greece and more specifically the Greek islands. The blue sea, the white houses, and life in Greece of another era were the ideal setting for Hollywood productions and other films that met with varying degrees of success. A typical case is certainly the film Mediterraneo. The Italian film directed by Gabriele Salvarotes won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film of 1991 and brought to the foreground one of the most beautiful but remote islands, Kastelorizo with its magical images.

The Italian film Mediterraneo, which also features Vanna Barba and is produced by Silvio Berlusconi’s company, tells the story of a small group of Italian soldiers. The soldiers during the occupation of the Greek island of Kastelorizo were isolated from the rest of the world.
They stay there and, while waiting to be attacked on the island by external forces, they decide to take a series of inadequate measures until they discover a small uninhabited village.
The uninhabited village, however, eventually hides several residents who mysteriously decide to show up, revealing that they had been forced into hiding as the Germans, who had previously been on the island, had taken all the men with them. Finally, seeing that the Italian soldiers there were harmless, they decided to reappear and continue their daily lives. Gradually, the locals come very close to the Italians, seeming to forget what separates them and living in harmony altogether.
