The Hercules trail in Fthiotida begins with an ascent through forest roads before transitioning onto the trail. As depicted in the map, the route conveniently circles Xerovouni from the north, leading you back to a plateau at an altitude of 1,500 meters. A detour to the location known as “Katavothra” is a must, where you can witness the plateau’s waters disappearing into a cave of the same name. This spot also offers a source of drinking water. The journey continues on a dirt road up to Pyra Heracleous.

The trail then heads south of Xerovouni and finally descends back to Pavliani. Congratulations, you’ve just traversed a route of unparalleled natural beauty in Greece.

The Hercules trail, recognized as one of Greece’s most scenic trails, spans approximately 18 km and is rated as moderately difficult. It typically takes around 5 hours to complete the route at a normal pace, so adequate preparation is essential for this adventure.

The villages around the path of Hercules

If you’re planning to explore the Hercules trail, the charming village of Pavliani is an ideal base. Known as one of Greece’s most picturesque villages, Pavliani not only offers proximity to the Hercules trail but also serves as a gateway to other stunning trails in Greece.

Beyond Pavliani, the region boasts several other beautiful villages worth visiting. One such village is Sklithro in Fokida. Nestled at an altitude of 760 meters, Sklithro is a perfect retreat for those seeking a close encounter with nature. Surrounded by the mountains of Parnassos, Oiti, Vardousia, and Giona, Sklithro promises a breathtaking natural beauty that’s hard to match. So, if you’re looking for a serene walk amidst nature, Sklithro is the place to be.

The village of Dio Vouna also deserves a spot on the list. Despite not being widely known, Dio Vouna holds a special place in history for two main reasons.

Firstly, it was the birthplace of the chieftain of the Greek Revolution, Dyovouniotis, who played a pivotal role in the decisive Battle of Vasilika on August 26, 1821. Secondly, the village bears historical significance due to the ruins of the Long Walls on its southern side. These walls were constructed by Justinian around 600 AD, adding another layer of historical depth to this unique village.
