Greece, a country of unique beauty, is a puzzle composed of landscapes, rare geological phenomena, and unpredictable natural spectacles in both mountains and sea. These elements ignite a desire to continually explore and uncover its wonders. Among the intriguing and beautiful places in Greece is the unique stone forest, an impressive geological phenomenon located in Epirus, specifically in Zagorochoria. This geotope, a result of nature’s artistry, captivates visitors with its composition of limestones that are impossible to overlook.

Greece’s Stone Forest: A Unique and Impressive Sight

The stone forest resides in the prefecture of Ioannina, specifically in the area known for the famous Zagorochoria. As you travel from the village of Monodendri to Oxia, you’ll encounter this forest of stones, formed by structures of fine limestone. Over many years, corrosion and weathering of the slabs have resulted in this impressive sight. The scene becomes even more special as the stone forest is nestled within a traditional forest of oaks and maples.

The alpine environment in the wider area is breathtaking. If you’re there, you’ll undoubtedly pause to capture numerous photos and admire the landscape. The stone forest, along with other parts of the area, is an important geotope and a popular tourist attraction. It’s one of Greece’s unusual sights that you must visit.

Viewing Vikos Gorge from Oxia

After passing through the Stone Forest and the village of Monodendri, you’ll have the opportunity to reach a location known as Oxia. From there, you can take in the breathtaking view of Vikos Gorge. This spot, which is in the Guinness Book of World Records and also referred to as the Grand Canyon of Greece, will leave you awestruck. Vikos Gorge holds the record for being the deepest gorge in terms of length-width-height ratio worldwide. The gorge spans nearly 11 kilometers, and in many places, the depth exceeds 1,000 meters.

Upon seeing the signs for Oxia, you’ll come across a relatively wide plateau. Here, you can park your car and continue on foot. After walking about 100 meters along a path, you’ll be greeted by a landscape that will overwhelm you. Vikos Gorge stretches out before you, and every sound you make will echo back, creating a memorable experience if you’re in the area.

Zagorochoria is, deservedly, one of the most popular destinations throughout the year, boasting many of Greece’s unusual sights. If you find yourself there, we recommend three additional activities:

  • Try the local pies made with traditional phyllo that’s prepared in the area. (Ask for the flour pie or Cassiopeia, and you won’t be disappointed).
  • Go hiking on one of the area’s paths, which offer views of rare beauty.
  • Seek out and visit one of the area’s most beautiful bridges, such as the bridge of Kokkoris or Noutso
