Dilofo – Zagori: The village you might think is a fake scenery

Dilofo - ZagoriOnce you are here, you wonder if what your eyes see is real and not fake, as Dilofo in Zagori is one of those villages that look like a real painting. Which was masterfully crafted by both nature and the masterful technique of stone masons. The name of the settlement until 1920 was Sopetseli or So(m)potseli, a name that in Slavic and Vlach means “place with many waters”. Its current name, however, Dilofo, reflects the actual location of the village, which is built on two hills. The settlement has been characterized as traditional and preserved, something that enhances its unaltered traditional character over time, as only restorations and reconstructions are allowed in its buildings, not the creation of new ones.

Dilofo - ZagoriAnyone who visits Dilofo will realize that it is a real gem of a village. Built on the slopes of Tymfi, it is a typical example of local, traditional, Zagorian architecture. Its magical setting is full of well-preserved stone houses and magnificent mansions, narrow cobbled streets, stone fountains, and a fairytale central square. The huge plane tree in the village square is a reference point for Dilofo, which has almost four centuries of life. No wonder, then, that it is also a natural monument. It is worth seeing up close the Makropoulos mansion, the tallest house in the whole of Zagori, with a height of 13.5 meters, as well as visiting the church of the Assumption, the Anagnostopoulos School, and the Bridge of Captain Bear in Skourti.
