Zagorochoria, a special region of Greece

Suppose you have five days to explore Zagorochoria, with the weather on your side. You want to experience the area without rushing. We recommend a leisurely tour of five must-see villages, especially if it’s your first visit. Start your journey in West Zagori, meander through Central Zagori, and circle back to West. This route allows you to soak in the sights without feeling overwhelmed.

Epirus: Mikro Papigo
Mikro Papigo

Begin your Zagorochoria adventure with two days in mind to spend visiting the villages of Papigo and Aristi. Papigo split into Mikro (small) and Megalo (large) Papigo, and Aristi is known for its stunning architecture and breathtaking views of the Astrakas towers. These aren’t actual towers, but formations of the Tymfis mountain that dominates the landscape. If you like to hike and depending on the season of your visit, there is Drakolimni, which is known as the Dragon Lake of Tymfi. It is situated in the alpine meadow of Tymfi at an elevation of 2,050 meters. This majestic location requires a substantial walk to fully appreciate its beauty.

A five-day journey to Zagorochoria

Booking your stay in Aristi positions you conveniently for your journey to Central Zagori. The first day of your trip, in these popular villages, allows you to stroll around, savor delicious local cuisine, and return to your base. Nestled between these two villages there is a unique natural attraction, the Kolimbithres or Ovires. These natural rock pools are a sight to behold. Remember to wear sturdy footwear like sneakers or boots for this excursion.

Dedicate your second day to exploring Aristi, a key stop for visitors to the area. Don’t miss the chance to visit the Aristi Bridge, which spans the crystal-clear waters of the Voidomatis River.

The enchanting scenery at Aristi Bridge might make you feel as if elves and fairies could appear at any moment. Each season unveils a unique charm, making it worth visiting at least four times in your lifetime.

Your third day in Aristi could be spent embarking on a thrilling rafting adventure on the Voidomatis River. Ideal for beginners, this activity offers a unique perspective of the landscape, accessible only by rafting or hiking.

Central Zagori, is picturesque and hospitable

As day four of your Zagorochoria journey begins, Central Zagori greets you warmly. This area is famous for its delicious traditional pies, which you can enjoy under the refreshing shade of plane trees in the warmer months. During the colder season, these tasty treats can be savored next to a cozy wood stove, adding a comforting touch to your culinary adventure.

Your day’s exploration leads you to the picturesque villages of Vitsa and Monodendri. Both of them can be explored comfortably in a day, with either village serving as an ideal base for your overnight stay.

Vitsa, surrounded by lush greenery, provides a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle. The village’s stone houses and cobblestone streets radiate a charm that takes you back in time.

In contrast, Monodendri is a lively center of culture and history. Its well-preserved mansions and the historic Monastery of Agia Paraskevi, located on the edge of the Vikos Gorge, are must-see attractions.

The panoramic views of the gorge from Monodendri are truly awe-inspiring in particular, offers a breathtaking view of the Vikos Gorge from the Oxia viewpoint. This stunning natural wonder, often referred to as the ‘Grand Canyon of Greece’, has even been recognized in the Guinness Book of Records.

During your walk, keep an eye out for the Stone Forest, another unique natural attraction featuring distinctive limestone formations. Whether you’re admiring the expansive vistas of the Vikos Gorge or wandering through the Stone Forest, your day in Vitsa and Monodendri is sure to be filled with moments of wonder.

Whether it’s the tranquil beauty of Vitsa or the historical charm of Monodendri, your fourth day in Zagorochoria is sure to be unforgettable.

The last day with a stop in West Zagori

On the fifth and final day of your journey, you’ll discover one of Zagori’s most beautiful and renowned villages, Tsepelovo. As the largest village in terms of population in the Zagori region, Tsepelovo is approximately 50 kilometers from the city of Ioannina. This traditional settlement boasts numerous listed buildings, allowing you to wander through stone alleys and admire the architecture from a bygone era.

Just two kilometers outside the village, above the so-called “Vikaki” gorge, you’ll find the stone Monastery of Rogovo. This is a must-visit spot if you’re in the area.

Don’t be surprised if you find Tsepelovo bustling with visitors during the autumn and winter seasons, as it’s a popular tourist destination during these times. Despite its remote location at an altitude of a thousand meters, you’ll feel an immediate sense of disconnection from everyday worries and routines as soon as you step into the village square. While a day is sufficient to explore Tsepelovo, the village’s charm is sure to leave you wanting more. Each season offers a unique experience, so you might find yourself planning a return visit to experience this corner of Epirus in the summer or the vibrant spring.

If you have time, in the area there is the Vradeto Staircase, a stone-paved helical path made of 1000 steps that was used long ago because it connects the two villages, Vradeto and Kapesovo.
