Amidst the northern Aegean waters, nestled between the islands of Samos and Ikaria, lies an archipelago of tiny islets known as Fourni Korseon. The largest island, also called Fournoi, captivates visitors with its unspoiled charm and tranquil aura. Its lands were once favored by pirates as a refuge. But what renders Fourni so serene and yet so extraordinary?

Chora, the so-called main town

The pulse of Fourni can be felt in Chora, the island’s most vibrant settlement. As your ship moors in its quaint harbor, you’ll be spellbound by the traditional landscape, with its diminutive square serving as the lifeline of this enchanting locale. In Chora, you’ll discover an array of taverns serving delectable fresh fish under the cool shade of trees. After all, fishing is the primary occupation of Fourni’s inhabitants. You’ll also find cafes where you can refresh yourself with “Lagou,” the island’s local orange juice.

A mere kilometer from Chora lies Kampi, a village where you can witness Fourni’s famed trio of stone windmills up close. Fourteen kilometers away, you’ll come across the settlement of Chrysomilia, where traditional boats add to the picturesque charm of its beaches. Atop the hill of Chrysomilia in Agia Triada stands the revered altar of the god Poseidon, a must-visit spot during your sojourn.

Before departing from the island, be sure to immerse yourself in its rich history. Ascend the hill of Agios Georgios on Fourni’s northern side to explore the remnants of the prehistoric castle’s cyclopean wall. As you near the summit, you’ll have the chance to stroll through the adjacent forty-acre Acropolis.

Venture to Petrokopi to discover the island’s historic quarries. Then, make your way to the southernmost cape, where an old military outpost stands. From there, you’ll be treated to a breathtaking sunset view, with the silhouettes of uninhabited rocky islets in the distance.

Pro tip: While in Fournoi, consider taking a trip to the idyllic haven of Thymaina, home to 150 residents. You’ll be mesmerized by its unspoiled natural beauty, seemingly frozen in time. Don’t miss the opportunity to take a dip in its renowned Keramidou Bay.

Kamari, a stunning beach, lies 10 kilometers from the capital. Its untamed shoreline is a blend of sand and pebbles, with lush vegetation providing natural shade. Remember to bring your mask to explore its spectacular seabed, home to the remnants of an ancient city. Head north to take a plunge in the waters of Gria Beach.

Fournoi Beaches: Petrokiopio Beach

Petrokopio Beach will instantly enchant you with its white rocks dotting the coast. Its turquoise waters and tamarisk trees providing natural shade create a one-of-a-kind setting in this unspoiled bay, situated adjacent to the ancient quarry. To access it, you’ll need to either follow the trail or take a sea route.

Fournoi Beaches: Kassidi Beach

Kassidi’s coast is nestled between the secluded, untamed Vlychada and Agios Ioannis on the island’s southern side. Its fine sand, crystal-clear waters, and serene ambiance create a tranquil haven that can only be accessed by sea. Crowds are a rarity in Kassidi, making it a popular spot for nudism among bathers.

Fournoi Beaches: Chysomillia Beach

The Chrysomilia Beach

Chrysomilia’s beach is among the island’s most renowned shores. Its sandy terrain, and shallow, crystal-clear waters unaffected by the wind make it an ideal destination for families. To reach its beach, you’ll need to traverse a dirt road for roughly thirty minutes or opt for a boat ride from Chora. After your swim, the eponymous settlement’s two taverns promise a scrumptious meal to cap off your day perfectly.

How to get to the Fournoi Island? To reach the serene haven of Fournoi, you’ll need to embark on a journey from the port of Piraeus, lasting anywhere between 7 to 15 hours, depending on your chosen route. If the duration seems daunting, rest assured that the destination will make it all worthwhile.

Fournoi Island has a singular ability to capture the hearts of every visitor. Make it your next stop and let its allure work its magic on you.
