There is no doubt… Koufonisia is now one of the most cosmopolitan destinations in the Cyclades. Tourism has flourished on the island in the last decade, making it one of the first islands in traffic across the Aegean. Although their visitor numbers have increased exponentially over the years, they have managed to maintain their natural beauty. The island complex of Koufonisia consists of Ano and Kato Koufonisi and belongs to the eastern Small Cyclades. The two Koufonisia are separated by a narrow strait, 200 meters wide.

Tzia: Beautiful beaches and a picturesque Chora

Their history

Ammos Beaches Koufonisia
Welcome to the different feeling that Koufonisia offers

Note that Pano Koufonissi is home to the port, Chora, and most of the beautiful beaches. Geographically, the two small islands are located southeast of Naxos and northwest of Amorgos. The asphalt road network in Koufonisia is small, and the distances are even shorter, so it is not necessary to have a means of transport. In addition, all routes are covered on foot, by boat to the beaches, and by bicycle.

Koufonisia has been inhabited continuously since prehistoric times

Koufonisia has been inhabited continuously since prehistoric times. Excavations in the area of “Epano Myloi” brought to light important findings, including funerary remains and other artifacts from the early phases of the Cycladic civilization. Perhaps the most important of these, a fry-shaped vase with a nine-pointed star engraved on it, is kept today in the Museum of Naxos.

A second excavation at the southern end of the east coast revealed findings from Hellenistic and Roman times. Neighboring Keros was also an important center of the Cycladic civilization (3,000 – 2,000 BC). During the centuries that followed, Koufonisia followed the common fate of all the islands of the Cyclades – that is, they became an apple of discord for various pirates.

Koufonisia: Their story
Special moments are experienced by visitors to Koufonisia

The islets were dominated by the Venetians and the Turks, who clashed several times during the 17th century for control of the Aegean islands. The people of Koufonisi, sometimes out of necessity and sometimes by choice, collaborated with Maniots or other pirates who used the strait between Pano and Kato Koufonisi as a safe haven.

Travel to Koufonisia
In Koufonisia, the traveler becomes one with nature

In the 17th century, during the great conflicts between the two naval superpowers of the time, Venice and Turkey, the people of Koufonisia found themselves stranded and facing the specter of famine because the island was barren. Koufonisia was liberated, like all the Cyclades, and incorporated into the newly established Greek state in 1830.

Holidays in Koufonisia: The beautiful beaches

Koufonisia beaches
Some of the beaches in Koufonisia are extremely impressive

Blue-green, small, and lace – these are the ideal words to describe the great asset that Koufonisia has, which is none other than its beaches. All along the southern coast of the island, from Parianos in the west to Pori in the east, the beaches are magnificent.

Koufonisia Beaches
The beaches of Koufonisia offer special moments

Golden-sand bays alternate with wild sea caves, where the waves have carved into the rocks. In general, as one walks to the east, the beaches become better and the vegetation comparatively denser. A path parallel to the southern coastline of the island allows you to choose the beach that suits you. So note the following in Pano Koufonisi:

Koufonisia beaches: Ammos

Harokopou or Finikas Beach: Wonderful, sandy and with turquoise waters. After swimming, you can enjoy your meal at the tavern “Finikas”, from which the beach took its name.

Fanos: Sandy, with crystal clear turquoise waters. The café-restaurant of the same name offers drinks and food.

Koufonisia beaches: Gala

Milk: It looks like a dreamy artist painted it on canvas. Swimming in these waters is a special experience

Italian: The beach also has transparent turquoise waters and golden sand that make it reminiscent of tropical coasts. You may also meet nudists.

Pori Beach – Koufonissi | Pori Beach – Koufonisi – Cyclades

Pori: It is considered the most beautiful beach on the island. Golden sand and enchanting turquoise waters compose the exotic scenery. It has some natural shade and a tavern.

Kato Koufonissi beaches
Magnificent picture from Kato Koufonissi

As for Kato Koufonissi, it is ideal for a day trip. Please note that there are no accommodations here, only the option of free camping, if… You have it. Also, the beaches are not organized. To explore Kato Koufonissi, you will use the caique, which runs several daily itineraries. The beaches here are quieter, but equally beautiful. Note these two:

Koufonisia beaches: Lakki

Lakkoi: Sheltered, with pebbles, and with the classic, beautiful color of the waters of Koufonisia

Water: Fine pebbles, cool waters, and tamarisk trees on the favorite beach of free campers and nudists.

Koufonisia beaches: Kastello

Kastelloi: You will look for it in the northwest of the island. The natural landscape will fascinate you. Access is only by boat.

Gastronomy in Koufonisia

Pano Koufonissi has fanatical friends and is famous for its dishes. The options for dining and entertainment are now enough, but they do not “take away” from the authentic character of the island. Wherever you sit, you will taste delicious fish appetizers and the famous lobster spaghetti of the island. If you do not try the dishes and sweets at “Kalofego” in Pori overlooking the magnificent sunset, you will have missed a unique experience.

Do not miss the opportunity to eat seafood at “Aneplora” and “Captain-Nikolas”, but also to drink a cold beer and taste delicious stews at “Finikas”. As for something fast, souvlaki in “Strofi” is famous for its taste and quality. For coffee, breakfast, and dessert, you will be thrilled at “Kalamia” and “Chelona” (Nikitas). Among other things, the bakery “Giorgoula” is famous for its cheese pie, while the best ice cream in all the Cyclades is said to be served at “Pistachio”.

Holidays in Koufonisia and accommodation

 Koufonisia accommodation
Today, staying in Koufonisia is a difficult equation due to high demand and low supply

The high celebrity of Koufonisia has led to an increase in accommodation here, until the 90s, when it was an almost deserted and completely alternative destination. Now you will find all kinds of accommodation. There are hotels, guesthouses, rooms to let, furnished apartments, and studios, of various categories and types.

Food in Koufonisia
During the period of high traffic, it is difficult to satisfy all visitors

However, their number is finite, which is why during periods of high traffic, any kind of accommodation is scarce on Ano Koufonisi. In the past, the island had an organized camping, but it no longer operates. If you want, you can try free camping in the isolated Kato Koufonisi.

In short…

Holidays in Koufonisia
Holidays in Koufonisia offer another type of experience

Holidays in Koufonisia are above all an aesthetic experience, like “Blue Lake”. The eye is constantly overwhelmed by all shades of Aegean blue, while holidays maintain a slow pace and surrender to restlessness.

Start your day with a traditional Greek coffee in a shop in Chora

And of course, with a small navel inside them that will enchant you: Their Country. White and blue, always whitewashed, it encapsulates in its small extent the whole identity of the Aegean.
