Crete, known for its unique attractions, has been recognized by Forbes. It’s considered a place where American or Canadian retirees can enjoy a high-quality lifestyle at reasonable costs. This balance is hard to achieve, yet Crete successfully offers it. However, Crete isn’t the only European destination that meets these criteria. Valencia in Spain, Braga in Portugal, Gascony in France, and Kotor in Montenegro also make the top five list.

Forbes conducted a study to determine the cost of living for a couple, taking into account the quality of life offered by each location. Five European destinations emerged as top choices, with Crete being the most affordable. The study aimed to provide alternatives to Asia and Latin America, and while Europe was the focus, opportunities exist elsewhere too.

The costs were calculated in dollars every month for a retired American couple. These locations offer a high quality of life where Americans could potentially save up to 60% compared to their current expenses. Notably, Crete, which is of particular interest to us, boasts over 300 sunny days a year, enhancing its appeal. However, for Greeks, the cost of living in Crete is not 60% less than their current expenses. Here are the monthly costs for two people according to the Forbes report:

  • Braga, Portugal: $2,855
  • Kotor, Montenegro: $2,658
  • Valencia, Spain: $2,477
  • Gascony, France: $1,952
  • Crete, Greece: $1,865

According to Forbes, Crete is gaining popularity over Santorini. More precisely, the Cycladic island is losing its appeal, a trend that Crete is capitalizing on. But what makes Crete, the largest island in Greece, more appealing? There are numerous reasons.

Gorges in Crete: The Samaria Gorge

Crete’s natural beauty is a major draw. The island offers attractions throughout the year. Tourist activity may peak in the summer due to the combination of mountain and sea, but Crete remains a destination full of choices all year round. For instance, there are seven unique experiences to enjoy in Crete during winter.

Heraklion - Knossos
Knossos, with its rich history, attracts many tourists, especially from abroad.

The Samaria Gorge is a notable feature of Crete. In addition to its stunning beaches and the village known as the most colorful in Greece, Crete boasts gorges full of secrets. The island’s archaeological sites are also gaining popularity among tourists. Crete’s gastronomy, with its local products that contribute to the island’s self-sufficiency, is another attraction. These products find their way abroad, introducing the world to this blessed place. Compared to Santorini, Crete offers a wider range of options. You can get in your car and follow any route that appeals to you.

Crete and Gastronomy
A place that enjoys 300 sunny days a year can only be delightful…

If someone prefers Crete over Santorini, it could lead to an interesting and fruitful conversation. We all know what Crete is famous for. If you find it suitable to live there permanently and you can afford it, go ahead. If not, you can always visit as a tourist. Crete is waiting for you…
