A trip to the Cyclades, such as Rafina or Mykonos, is enough to hear the ancient civilization revived through its monuments. What could make a trip more interesting, if not a historical retrospection of the culturally significant Cyclades?

We have combined these islands with food, lacy shores, and summer crowds. However, the Cyclades islands had a remarkable culture in antiquity. So let’s take a tour of some of the most interesting historical spots of the island complex.

Rafina Mykonos: Beyond the glamour, a look at the wonders of antiquity

Mykonos, famous for its cosmopolitan beaches and frantic nightlife, hides more than the eye can see. Let’s set the luxuries aside and dive together into the island’s rich history.

Archaeological Museum of Mykonos: In Mykonos Town, the Archaeological Museum houses artifacts from Rhenia and Delos. The collection includes texts, sculptures, and jewelry, which give us a picture of the everyday life of the inhabitants.

Rafina Tinos: The gateway to a spiritual and historical Odyssey

Tinos is also known as the Island of the Virgin Mary, which is why it is associated with the popular pilgrimage on the Fifteenth of August. Apart from the spiritual quests, the trip to Rafina Tinos offers much more in terms of thrills for the traveler.

  1. Archaeological Museum of Tinos: In the center of Chora is the island’s Archaeological Museum. It hosts a remarkable collection of exhibits that tell us the history of the place. Cycladic idols and statues from the Hellenistic period provide valuable information about the island’s decisive role in antiquity. Since the ticket is affordable, the Museum should be included on the list of attractions.
  2. The Fortress and the settlement of Xombourgo: In the center of the island, the strong fortification hill, where the Fortress and the settlement of Xombourgo are built, offers panoramic views. It stands proudly high, a testament to the island’s strategic importance.
  3. The sacred island of Delos: How about a short excursion to the sacred island of antiquity, Delos? If you visited the island of Panagia, an afternoon walk to this archaeological gem is a must. It was once a major religious center of antiquity and a vital economic center. Let us not forget that the treasury of Delos was the reason for the beginning of the Peloponnesian War. Today, the whole island is an open-air museum, with the emblematic Lion Gate and the House of Cleopatra.

Rafina Andros: Cultural heritage in the midst of a verdant landscape

Anyone who makes the trip to Rafina Andros has in mind a verdant island known for its seamanship, but also for the fact that it was the birthplace of several shipowners. In fact, the green landscape of the Lady of the Cyclades is what makes it stand out from the rest of the islands of the complex. Apart from its natural beauty, Andros is also famous for its archaeological treasures. Let’s take a look.

  1. Archaeological Museum of Andros: The museum houses a wealth of impressive inscriptions and statues. Particular emphasis has been placed on the island’s maritime tradition, as evidenced by the exhibits in its collection. The Museum also hosts findings from the Neolithic era to the Byzantine times with photographs and models. Here, the well-preserved copy of the Map of Rigas Feraios is preserved. Also kept here are headless Kouros and a Roman copy of a statue of Artemis’s torso from the 2nd century. B.C.
  2. Archaeological site of Zagora: A lesser-known site of Andros, Zagora takes you back to ancient times. The well-preserved ruins, comprising settlements, walls, and a sanctuary, demonstrate the island’s historical importance. The goddess Athena was probably worshipped in the temple.
